The Gemini app now lets you edit the files it makes right in the chat, so the copy-paste-into-Word step can finally retire

Google's Gemini app can now make files such as documents, slide decks and PDFs, and let you preview and edit them inside the chat before you open or download them.

The short version

  • The Gemini app can now make files like slide decks and spreadsheets, and lets you preview and edit them without leaving the chat.
  • Google announced it on 29 October 2026 for Workspace customers and personal accounts; PDFs work on mobile, other files on the web only.
  • Next time you ask Gemini for a tracker, proposal or deck, ask for the file itself and fix it in the preview.

Asking AI for a document has usually meant getting a wall of text, then spending ten minutes making it look like a document. Google has cut out the middle bit.

What's new in the Gemini app?

The Gemini app can now create a file, show you a preview of it and let you edit it without leaving the chat. You can expand the file to full screen and type changes yourself, or highlight a passage and ask Gemini about it or to rework it.

Google gives three examples. Slide decks can be previewed and adjusted, then opened in Google Slides or downloaded as a PPTX or PDF. Spreadsheets, like trackers and tables, open straight in Google Sheets. Documents and PDFs can be edited inline and uploaded to Drive.

Who can use it, and when?

The feature is available now to all Google Workspace customers and Workspace Individual subscribers, plus anyone with a personal Google account, in every language the Gemini app supports. Google announced it on 29 October 2026.

PDF preview and editing works on the web and mobile. Every other format, from Google Docs to code files, is web only for now. There's no admin switch for this one, so if your team can use the Gemini app, they can use this.

Should your business use it?

Businesses already using Gemini should try it on the documents they rebuild every week, like job trackers or a short client deck.

My advice: ask for the file by name ("make me a Google Sheet tracking...") rather than asking a question and hoping for a table. Then do your edits in the preview before it goes anywhere.

It won't fix a weak brief, and you still need to read every number. But it does mean the AI hands you something closer to finished, which is more than the shared drive's "Proposal_FINAL_v2" has ever done.

Wondering what this means for your business?

That's exactly what the discovery call is for.
