Fill with Gemini in Google Sheets now shows its sources in every cell, so you can finally check its homework
By Brett Gavaghan, Founder of Adaptd ·
Google's AI fill tool in Sheets now lists the web sources behind each cell it fills, and handles up to 3,000 cells in one request.
The short version
- Fill with Gemini in Google Sheets now shows the web sources it used inside each cell it fills.
- It's rolling out from 20 October to Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Google AI Pro and Ultra.
- If you use AI to fill research columns, start clicking the sources before the numbers go anywhere important.
Asking AI to fill a spreadsheet column is quick. Working out where it got those answers has been the slow part. Google has just made that part a lot easier.
What changed in Fill with Gemini?
Fill with Gemini now attaches the exact web sources it used to each cell it fills in Google Sheets. Google announced the change on 28 October 2026, and the sources show up in Sheets on the web.
Say you've got a list of 200 suppliers and ask Gemini to fill in each one's head office city. Each answer now comes with the page it came from, so you can check a single cell without redoing the column. Google says the tool is also faster and handles up to 3,000 cells in one request.
Who can use it, and when?
The citations are rolling out to Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The gradual rollout started on 20 October and can take up to 15 days to reach everyone.
There's nothing for admins to switch on. If Gemini in Sheets already works for you, the sources will turn up on their own. Business Starter isn't on the list.
Should your business use it?
Your business should use Fill with Gemini for the boring research columns, as long as someone clicks a few of the sources before the data gets used. A citation tells you where the answer came from. It doesn't tell you the page was right.
My take: this is the feature that makes AI-filled spreadsheets usable for anything that matters, like pricing lists or supplier checks. Spot-check five or ten cells per column, and check every cell that ends up in front of a customer.
It's a bit like a new starter who shows their working. You still check it, but now you know where to look.
