Shopify's new knowledge base lets you brief AI shopping agents on your store, like a new casual before their first shift

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

Shopify added a knowledge base to the admin on 26 October. It drafts facts about your store for AI agents, and nothing scanned from your site goes out until you publish it.

The short version

  • Shopify's knowledge base is one admin page where you review, edit and publish the store facts AI agents use.
  • It went live on 26 October 2026 under Sales channels, and the old Knowledge Base app closes on 15 January 2027.
  • Read the drafted facts, fix anything wrong, then publish only what you're happy for AI agents to repeat.

AI shopping agents are already answering questions about online stores. Shopify now gives merchants a say in what those agents get told.

What is Shopify's knowledge base?

Shopify's knowledge base is a page in the admin, under Sales channels, Agentic, Knowledge base, where you manage the facts AI agents use about your store. Shopify drafts facts from your published storefront pages, and each draft links back to the page it came from.

Drafted facts stay hidden from AI agents until you publish them. Facts tied to your admin, such as policies and contact details, are published when Shopify creates them. Agents reach the facts through Shopify's Storefront MCP, including Shop and third-party AI platforms.

What changes for existing merchants?

Existing merchants using the standalone Knowledge Base app need to know it closes on 15 January 2027. Facts you wrote in the app moved across automatically if you had fewer than 1,000.

The new knowledge base holds 1,000 facts in total. Stores over that limit had theirs left behind and need to add back the ones they want before January. Shopify emailed those stores directly.

What should your business do about it?

Your business should read every drafted fact before publishing it, because the drafts come from whatever your website currently says. If your shipping page still mentions a courier you dropped two years ago, an AI agent could repeat it to a customer.

My advice: start with returns, shipping times and contact details, since those are the questions shoppers ask most. Shopify's post doesn't list any country limits, so Australian stores can check theirs now.

Think of it as the induction folder for a staff member who never sleeps and never asks a follow-up question.
