Gemini in Google Docs can now write from your own research notebooks

You can now point Gemini in Google Docs at a Gemini Notebook, and it will write using those sources and add citations. It is available now on Business Standard and above.

Google announced on 23 September that Gemini in Google Docs can now use a Gemini Notebook as its source material. If you have already gathered research in a notebook, you can ask Gemini to draft from it, and the draft comes back with citations to those sources.

To use it, type @ in the Gemini side panel or the bottom bar in a Doc and pick the notebook you want. Gemini uses the sources in that notebook for its answer and shows where each point came from, so you do not need to copy and paste between tools. It is available now on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Education Plus, and Google AI Pro and Ultra. Admins control it through the Gemini for Workspace in Drive setting, and each person needs Workspace smart features turned on.

For a midsize business, this helps with the documents that take the longest to start: proposals, tender responses, policies and client reports. If your team keeps product sheets, past proposals or meeting notes in a notebook, Gemini can write a first draft from your own material instead of general knowledge from the internet.

A draft is only as good as the notebook behind it. Keep notebooks tidy, remove out-of-date documents, and set up one notebook per topic or client so sources do not get mixed. Citations make checking easier, so click through a few before anything goes to a client.
