Microsoft Copilot for finance adds Xero and QuickBooks plugins, so month-end gets a junior who never asks for Friday off

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

Microsoft has added more than 25 finance skills to Copilot, with plugins for Xero and QuickBooks and Excel built into the Copilot app. Some parts are generally available now, others are still early access.

The short version

  • Microsoft Copilot for finance adds more than 25 finance skills, including reconciliations and journal entries in Excel and Cowork.
  • Finance skills in Excel are available now, accounting skills are in early access, and Xero and QuickBooks plugins are rolling out.
  • If you already pay for Microsoft 365 Copilot, ask your bookkeeper to test one month-end task with it.

Month-end in a small business usually means one person, one spreadsheet and a lot of quiet swearing. Microsoft wants Copilot to take some of that load.

What is Microsoft Copilot for finance?

Microsoft Copilot for finance is a set of more than 25 finance skills and partner plugins for Copilot, announced on 29 October 2026. Excel now sits inside the Copilot app, so you can analyse and edit a workbook from Chat or Cowork, Copilot's mode for handing over multistep jobs.

The accounting skills can reconcile accounts and flag discrepancies. They can also draft accruals and other journal entries, then explain what changed against plan. You can switch on an audit trail that records what Copilot changed and why.

Who can use it, and when?

Finance skills in Copilot in Excel are generally available now, while the accounting skills are only in Frontier, Microsoft's early access program. Partner plugins, including Xero, Intuit QuickBooks and Zoho Books, are starting to roll out through Microsoft's plugin registry.

Microsoft's announcement doesn't list prices or regions, and third-party plugins may need their own subscription or an admin to switch them on. There's also a capital markets plugin for bankers, which most of us can happily skip.

Should your business use it?

Small businesses already on Microsoft 365 Copilot and Xero should test Copilot for finance on one reconciliation before trusting it with month-end. Turn the audit trail on so your bookkeeper can see every change.

My take: the Xero plugin is the bit that matters for Australian businesses, but check with your IT provider that it's available to you before anyone gets excited. Copilot works only with files each person already has access to, which is a sensible fence.

Let it draft the journal entries. Keep a human signing them, at least until it's earned a mug in the staff kitchen.

Wondering what this means for your business?

That's exactly what the discovery call is for.
