Google Play now runs private apps you build with AI, so your one-off job tracker doesn't need three billion potential users

Google Play now lets people build an Android app with Google AI Studio and run it on their own phone without publishing it. It's in the US first, for people 18 and over.
The short version
- Google Play now lets you build an Android app with Google AI Studio and run it privately on your own phone.
- Google announced it on 13 October 2026 for users in the US aged 18 and over, and it isn't available in Australia yet.
- Australian businesses can sketch small internal tools in Google AI Studio now and wait for local availability before relying on them.
Plenty of business owners have a little app in their head: a job tracker, a stocktake list, a quote calculator nobody else would want. Google is making it easier to build that app and keep it to yourself.
What changed in Google Play?
Google Play now lets people run personal apps they build with AI on their own Android phone without publishing them to the Play Store. Google announced the change on 13 October 2026, as reported by TechCrunch.
You describe the app in Google AI Studio, Google's tool for building with Gemini, then launch it through Google Play with your normal Google account. The app doesn't appear in Play search or listings and isn't shared with anyone else. It still has to follow Google Play's existing policies.
Who can use it, and when?
Private apps are available first to Google Play users in the US who are 18 or older. They're not in Australia yet, and Google hasn't given a date for other countries.
Google says sharing with a small group of trusted people is coming in the months ahead, and that a popular personal app will be able to move to the public Play Store after its trust and safety reviews.
Should your business build its own app?
Small businesses with one fiddly, repeated job are the best fit for a private app built with AI, once the feature reaches Australia.
My take: this is the useful end of vibe coding, the term for building software by describing it to AI. A private app for one job is low risk, as long as it doesn't hold customer data or money. Start by writing down what the app should do on one page, then try it in Google AI Studio. Whatever you build, keep a copy of the data somewhere boring and reliable, because an app you made in an afternoon deserves the same trust as anything else made in an afternoon.
Wondering what this means for your business?
That's exactly what the discovery call is for.
