Google Meet can now draft your follow-up email when the call ends, before 'I'll send something through' becomes 'sorry, it's been a week'

Google Meet's new next steps can draft a follow-up email in Gmail or add action items to Google Tasks as soon as a meeting ends. It needs Gemini's 'Take notes for me' turned on during the call.
The short version
- Google Meet's next steps can draft a follow-up email in Gmail or add the meeting's action items to Google Tasks after a call.
- Next steps started rolling out on 5 October 2026 to Business Standard and Plus and Enterprise Standard and Plus, with 'Take notes for me' on.
- Turn on the follow-up email routine for one recurring meeting first, and read every draft before you send it.
Most meetings end with someone saying they'll send a quick recap. Most quick recaps arrive never. Google would like to fix that, at least for the ones held in Meet.
What are next steps in Google Meet?
Next steps in Google Meet are routines that run when a meeting ends: one drafts a follow-up email in Gmail, and the other adds the action items to Google Tasks. Google announced them on 12 October 2026. They're powered by Gemini and Workspace Studio, Google's automation tool.
After the call, look for 'Routines for this meeting' on the post-meeting screen and switch one on with a tap. It works for one-off and recurring meetings, and you can turn a routine on for all your meetings. Google says more routines are coming.
Who can use it, and when?
Next steps are available on Google Workspace Business Standard and Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, and Google AI Pro for Education. The rollout started on 5 October 2026 and may take more than 15 days to reach everyone.
The catch: 'Take notes for me' must be turned on during the meeting, because next steps are built from Gemini's notes. The feature is on by default, and admins can turn it off in the Workspace Studio admin settings or the 'Take notes for me' setting.
Should your business turn it on?
Businesses that already use Gemini's meeting notes should try next steps, because the recap email is the bit people skip.
My take: a drafted follow-up beats a perfect one that never gets written. But it's a draft, so read it before it goes out, especially if a client was on the call. AI notes can miss a 'maybe' or turn 'we'll look into it' into a promise. Start with your weekly team meeting, where a wrong action item costs a bit of embarrassment rather than a client. The recap is sorted. Doing the action items is still on you.
