Google Docs now opens Markdown files properly, so AI notes stop turning up covered in hashes and asterisks

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

Google Docs can now open and edit Markdown files without converting them, and Drive shows them fully formatted. Handy if your AI tools write in Markdown, and most of them do.

The short version

  • Google Docs can now open and edit Markdown (.md and .markdown) files, comments included, without converting them into a Google Doc.
  • It is rolling out to all Workspace customers and personal Google accounts from 5 October 2026, with nothing to switch on.
  • If AI tools save notes or reports for your team, store them as Markdown in Drive and edit them in Docs.

Ask an AI tool for a document and there's a fair chance it hands you Markdown, the plain-text format full of hashes and asterisks. Until now, Google Docs made you convert it first, and the conversion had a habit of mangling things.

What changed in Google Docs?

Google Docs now opens Markdown files natively, so you can edit .md and .markdown files together without changing the file type.

Google Drive also shows a rendered preview, with clickable links and proper tables instead of raw symbols. Google says the old import route often changed the formatting and stripped out comments. Anyone who has hunted a shared folder for the real version of a document knows how that story ends.

Who gets it, and when?

Every Google Workspace customer and anyone with a personal Google account gets Markdown support, rolling out gradually from 5 October 2026 over up to 15 days.

There's no admin control and no setting to find. Once it reaches your account, opening an .md file from Drive is enough.

Should your business use it?

Businesses that use AI tools or agents to write reports and meeting notes should use it, because Markdown is the format most AI models write in.

Google's point is that people and AI agents can now work on the same file, with no one writing raw syntax or converting anything. My advice: if an automation or AI tool saves documents for your team, have it drop Markdown files into a shared Drive folder and let people edit them there. One file, one version, and nobody squinting at asterisks wondering whether they were meant to be bold.
