Gmail Live lets you ask your inbox out loud where that supplier order got to, but it's US-only for now

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

Google is rolling out Gmail Live, a voice search that answers questions about your email out loud on your phone. It's on paid Workspace plans, but only for US users in US English so far.

The short version

  • Gmail Live is a voice search in the Gmail mobile app that answers spoken questions using your email and links to the source messages.
  • It is rolling out from 15 October 2026 on paid Workspace plans, but only for US users with US English settings.
  • It is not in Australia yet; admins should note it switches on by default where Gemini in Workspace is enabled.

Searching email on a phone is its own small misery, usually attempted in a car park with one hand full. Google would like you to just ask.

What is Gmail Live?

Gmail Live is a voice search in the Gmail app on Android and iPhone that answers questions about your inbox out loud. You tap Live in the search bar and ask something like when your next training is due, or where a supplier's order is up to.

Gmail Live replies with a spoken answer and shows a card linking to the emails it used, so you can check its working. You can choose the voice, and Google says it runs on recent Gemini models.

Who can use it, and when?

Gmail Live is rolling out from 15 October 2026 to paid Google Workspace plans, including Business Starter, Standard and Plus, and to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers. It can take up to 15 days to appear.

It's out in the US first: for now it only works for users in the US with US English as their language. Google hasn't given a date for Australia, so it's not here yet. Where it is available, it's on by default for organisations with Gemini in Workspace and follows the existing smart features settings.

What should Australian businesses do about it?

Australian businesses don't need to do anything yet, but Workspace admins should know Gmail Live arrives switched on wherever Gemini is enabled. Decide now whether that suits your team.

My take: voice search makes most sense for people who live on their phones, like tradies, sales reps and anyone driving between jobs. It only knows what's in the inbox, though. If supplier updates arrive by text message or a phone call, Gmail Live can't help you.

Talking to your inbox in public will feel odd at first. Then again, so did talking to the car.
