Gmail's AI Inbox reaches paid Workspace accounts in the US first, pulling the to-dos out of threads that ran longer than the meeting

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

Google is rolling out AI Inbox to paid Google Workspace users. It pulls to-dos and deadlines out of your email and summarises busy threads. For now it's US English only, so it isn't in Australia yet.

The short version

  • AI Inbox in Gmail lists to-dos and deadlines found in your emails and summarises the topics you need to catch up on.
  • It's rolling out to paid Workspace Business and Enterprise users from October 2026, but only in the US with US English for now.
  • Australian Workspace users can't get it yet, so it's a good time to decide whether you'd trust an AI-made to-do list.

Every business has the email thread that started as a quick question and ended as fourteen replies, two attachments and one buried deadline. Google wants Gemini to do the digging.

What is AI Inbox in Gmail?

AI Inbox is a Gmail view that uses AI to pull action items, deliverables and deadlines out of your email conversations. It also summarises your most important topics, including long back-and-forth threads, so you can see the latest decisions without reading every reply.

It sits in the Gmail menu on desktop and in the mobile app.

Who gets it, and when?

Paid Google Workspace users in the US get AI Inbox first, and only with US English as their language. That covers Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and AI Pro for Education. Starter editions follow in the coming months.

Rapid Release domains started rolling out on 12 October and Scheduled Release domains start on 26 October. Google hasn't given a date for Australia or other languages.

There's no admin switch either. When it reaches your account, your team gets it.

Should your business use it?

Australian businesses can't use AI Inbox yet. With no admin control, the real question for your team is trust: is an AI-made to-do list a helpful nudge, or the list you work from?

My take: treat it as a second pair of eyes, not the boss. It will catch the deadline in paragraph four. It may also miss the one the client mentioned on the phone and never wrote down.

If you'd rather not wait, Gemini in Gmail can already summarise a thread in Australia. Ask it for the action items and you'll get a feel for how far you'd trust the full version, before it starts running your day.

Wondering what this means for your business?

That's exactly what the discovery call is for.
