ChatGPT's dots now answer text messages, so your AI agent can finally reach you the same way your plumber does

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

OpenAI's always-on dot agents can now be reached over iMessage and RCS, so you can text a dot a task, a photo or a voice note and it texts back with updates.

The short version

  • ChatGPT dots, OpenAI's always-on AI agents, can now send and receive text messages over iMessage and RCS.
  • 9to5Mac reported the change on 28 October 2026; dots come with ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium, and you switch texting on in the dot's profile.
  • Before you text a dot work tasks, decide what it's allowed to do without asking you first.

Dots used to live in Slack and the ChatGPT app, which is fine until you're on a job site with neither open. Now they're in your messages, next to the plumber and the group chat.

What changed in ChatGPT dots?

ChatGPT dots can now be reached by text message through iMessage on Apple devices or RCS on Android. Until now, you could only talk to a dot in Slack or in the ChatGPT app on mobile, desktop and web.

You can text a dot a task or something to keep an eye on, using text, photos or voice notes, and it texts you back with updates. OpenAI says the dot has the same context and plugins wherever you reach it.

Who can use it, and how do you set it up?

Dot texting is available to people who already have a dot. The first dot comes with the ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium plans. To turn it on, open your dot's profile and tap Texting.

On privacy, OpenAI says texting your dot doesn't give the dot or OpenAI access to your other text conversations. The report doesn't say whether texting is limited to certain countries, so look for the Texting option in Australia before planning around it.

Should your business use it?

Business owners who already use a dot should try texting it for small jobs first, like reminders, quick lookups or watching for a reply from a supplier.

My take: texting makes a dot far easier to use on the move, and that's also why it needs rules. A text is quick to send and easy to get wrong, so keep approval switched on for anything the dot sends, buys or changes.

If you're not on Pro or Business Premium, this isn't a reason to upgrade on its own. It's a handy extra for people who already have a dot. Just don't be surprised when your AI agent replies faster than half your suppliers.
