Zapier Agents now lives inside your Zaps as AI by Zapier, so the clever bit sits next to the bits that already work
By Brett Gavaghan, Founder of Adaptd ·
On 6 October Zapier moved everything Zapier Agents could do into a single AI step in the Zap editor. You get per-tool approvals, a choice of model and costs you can see before the invoice.
The short version
- Zapier Agents is now AI by Zapier, a single AI step that can reason and use tools inside any Zap.
- Zapier announced the change on 6 October 2026; existing agents show a banner with a step-by-step migration guide.
- Move one agent across, switch on approval for anything that messages a client, and check the task cost per run.
Zapier Agents used to live on their own island, away from the triggers and run history that make Zapier useful. Zapier has now built a bridge and moved everyone over.
What changed in Zapier?
Zapier has folded Zapier Agents into AI by Zapier, an AI step you drop into a normal Zap that can reason, call tools and act on its own.
The agent's instructions become the step's prompt, its tools go in a tools picker, and its trigger becomes any Zap trigger from Zapier's 9,000-plus apps. That means you can let the AI decide which record to update, then use an ordinary Zapier action to send the confirmation email exactly the same way every time. Every run lands in Zap History with the tools it called and the tasks it used.
What does it cost?
AI by Zapier steps are billed in tasks, the same as the rest of Zapier, with each step costing 1, 3 or 5 tasks depending on the model tier.
You pick a tier or name a specific model. You can also require approval before the AI uses a particular tool, and a single run that goes past 75 tasks pauses for a human instead of looping away in the background. A few knowledge sources, such as HubSpot and Jira, aren't supported yet.
What should you do about it?
Businesses with existing Zapier Agents should look for the migration banner on each agent and move them across one at a time.
My take: this is the sensible way to use AI in automation. Let the AI handle the judgement call, and keep the parts that have to be right every time as plain Zap steps. Turn on approval for anything that emails a client or moves money. Start on the cheapest tier until the job proves it needs more. Nobody needs a premium model to decide whether an email is about an invoice.
