Telstra's AI agent checks bills across old and new systems, which is the spreadsheet job nobody puts their hand up for

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

Telstra is using an AI agent built with Microsoft to reconcile billing and payments while it moves customers to new systems. People still review the cases it raises.

The short version

  • Telstra is using an AI agent built with Microsoft to reconcile billing and payments across its old and new systems.
  • Microsoft says the agent supports more than 272,000 service migrations, with recommendations over 95% accurate, as reported on 28 October 2026.
  • Small businesses can apply the same idea: let AI flag mismatches between two lists and have a person fix them.

Every business has a job that involves holding two lists side by side and squinting. Telstra has handed its version to an AI agent.

What is Telstra's billing agent?

Telstra's billing agent is an AI agent that reconciles billing and payments across Telstra's legacy and new systems while customers are moved over, iTnews reported on 28 October 2026. It flags inconsistencies, recommends fixes and creates detailed cases for staff to review.

Telstra built it with Microsoft Frontier Company, Microsoft's AI consulting unit that launched in July 2026.

How well is it working?

Microsoft says the agent is supporting more than 272,000 service migrations in production, with recommendations more than 95% accurate. Those are Microsoft's figures, and iTnews notes it hasn't checked them independently.

Telstra also runs an AI control plane to watch AI cost and governance, set up with Accenture. Which is a grown-up way of saying someone is keeping an eye on the meter.

What can a small business learn from it?

Small businesses can use AI the same way Telstra does: have it compare two sets of records and flag what doesn't match, then let a person decide. Think bank feed against invoices, or timesheets against payroll.

My take: the design is the clever bit. The AI finds the problems and a human signs off the fix. You don't need a telco budget for that. Copilot in Excel or ChatGPT can compare two spreadsheets if you ask clearly.

Even a 95% accurate agent needs someone checking the other 5%. Preferably someone who's had their coffee.
