Teams now lets staff report a suspicious meeting or guest, for when nobody's sure who invited them

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

Microsoft has added meetings and meeting participants to Teams' report-a-security-concern option. Reports go to your security mailbox, to Microsoft, or both. It's part of Defender for Office 365.

The short version

  • Teams users can now report a scheduled or Meet now meeting, or a single participant, as a security concern during or after the meeting.
  • The feature was added in October 2026 for organisations with Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 or Plan 2.
  • Check where Teams reports are sent in your security settings, and tell your team the option exists.

Scams have moved from the inbox into the meeting room. You've probably had the email that pretends to be your bank. The next one may join your Teams call with a webcam and a confident title.

What changed in Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams now lets users report a meeting, or an individual person in a meeting, as a security concern, either during the meeting or afterwards.

It works for scheduled meetings and Meet now meetings. People can also mark a participant that Teams wrongly flagged as suspicious as not a security concern. Microsoft added reporting for group calls in September, so meetings are the next step for a feature that already covered calls.

Who can use it, and where do reports go?

The meeting reporting option is part of Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 and Plan 2, listed in Microsoft's October 2026 update notes.

Where each report ends up depends on your Teams user-reported settings: your chosen reporting mailbox, Microsoft, or both. Since September, eligible organisations can manage Teams reporting separately from email reporting in the Microsoft Defender portal.

What should your business do about it?

Businesses with Defender for Office 365 should check that Teams reports go to a mailbox someone actually reads, then tell staff the option exists.

My advice: add one line to your team's scam guidance. If someone in a meeting asks for a payment, a password or a change of bank details, report the meeting and confirm by phone on a number you already have. A report button only helps if people know it's there, and if someone is on the other end when it's pressed.
