Notion's new AI credits work like a phone plan: a big allowance for everyday use and a smaller one for the fancy stuff
By Brett Gavaghan, Founder of Adaptd ·
Notion has rebuilt its agents and split AI credits into Standard and Select allowances. Existing Business and Enterprise customers move to the new system on 2 November.
The short version
- Notion now splits AI credits into Standard, where Notion picks the model, and Select, where you pick it or run Custom Agents.
- Business and Enterprise seats get 1,500 Standard and 500 Select credits a month, and existing customers move over on 2 November.
- Leave everyday work on Auto, and check which Custom Agents your team runs before the switch.
Most people pick the most expensive AI model the way they pick the biggest coffee: just in case. Notion has now built its pricing around talking you out of that.
What changed in Notion AI?
Notion AI now runs on a new credit system and rebuilt agents, announced on 19 October 2026. Its Auto setting sends each task to the model that best balances quality, speed and cost, and Notion says it gets similar results to top models at about 90% lower average cost.
Notion Agents can now work on a single task for more than 24 hours, up from five minutes. People on ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go can also connect that plan to their personal Notion Agent, so you're not paying for the same AI twice.
What's in the new credit system?
Each Business and Enterprise seat now includes 1,500 Standard credits a month for work where Notion picks the model, and 500 Select credits a month for when you choose the model or run Custom Agents. Admins can buy extra credits for shared agents, pricier models and anything past the included amount.
The system is live for new customers now. Existing customers move over on 2 November, and admins will get an email with the details. A new AI Command Center is coming soon, with usage by member and agent, spending limits and alerts as the workspace nears its limit.
What should your business do about it?
Your business should look at which Custom Agents it runs before 2 November, because those draw on the smaller Select allowance. Notion says most users are unlikely to run out, which is probably true for the person who uses AI to tidy meeting notes, and less true for the one with six agents running all night.
My advice: leave everyday writing and summaries on Auto, give each agent an owner, and set spending limits as soon as the Command Center turns up.
An agent that runs for 24 hours is handy. One that runs for 24 hours on the expensive model is how you meet your accountant.
