HubSpot adds spending caps for AI credits, so your agents can't run up a bar tab while you're at lunch

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

HubSpot now sets a default cap on AI credit use, lets customers swap seats for credits mid-contract, and offers flat-rate packs or pay-as-you-go billing.

The short version

  • HubSpot announced spend controls for its credit-based AI features on 15 October 2026.
  • Accounts get a default credit limit of up to 50% above monthly credits, adjustable by feature and action.
  • If you use HubSpot's AI agents, check your credit limit and decide who in the business can change it.

AI agents are handy right up until the invoice arrives. HubSpot has now added a brake pedal.

What did HubSpot change?

HubSpot added spending controls to its AI credits on 15 October 2026. Credits pay for HubSpot's AI features and agents, such as the Customer Agent and Prospecting Agent, so the bill moves with how much work they do.

Each account now has a default credit limit set at up to 50% above its monthly credits. You can change that limit, and set separate limits for individual features and actions. HubSpot says it won't automatically move you to a bigger plan when usage grows.

What else is in the update?

HubSpot customers can now move budget from seats to credits, or to a different seat type, without waiting for their contract to renew. So if you're paying for a seat nobody logs into, that money can go towards the agent that's doing the work.

You can also choose how to pay for extra usage: monthly credit packs for a predictable bill, or pay-as-you-go for whatever goes over your monthly credits.

What should your business do about it?

A business using HubSpot's AI features should check its credit limit, set a cap on any agent that runs on its own, and decide who is allowed to change those limits. A cap stops a surprise bill, but it doesn't tell you which agent is earning its keep.

My advice: look at which features used the most credits last month and ask whether each one brought in leads, answers or sales you'd have missed. If it didn't, lower its limit before you raise anyone else's. Atlassian starts billing extra Rovo use in December too, so this is a good month to check every tool that charges by usage.

Usage pricing is fine. Usage pricing nobody watches is how a tool becomes a subscription with a mind of its own.
