Copilot in SharePoint is now generally available, and it can undo the edit nobody admits to making
By Brett Gavaghan, Founder of Adaptd ·
Copilot in SharePoint reached general availability from 30 September. Most of it comes with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, and a few extras run on pay-as-you-go Copilot Credits.
The short version
- Copilot in SharePoint lets people create content, ask questions about their files and organise document libraries inside SharePoint.
- General availability started rolling out on 30 September 2026, and most features are included with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence.
- Image editing, advanced autofill and site analytics use Copilot Credits, so set a spending policy before staff find them.
SharePoint is where a lot of businesses keep their files, and where a lot of those files go to be quietly forgotten. Microsoft's pitch is that Copilot can now do some of the tidying up.
What is Copilot in SharePoint?
Copilot in SharePoint is Microsoft 365 Copilot working inside SharePoint sites and libraries, where it can create content, answer questions from your files and organise documents.
Microsoft's October update adds some practical jobs. Copilot can split, merge and reorder PDFs, such as pulling the pricing section out of a tender response into its own file. It can read a file's version history, explain what changed and restore an earlier version, which beats opening four copies side by side. It can also fill in library columns, like product area or sentiment, by reading each file.
What does it cost?
Most Copilot in SharePoint features are included with a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence, and general availability began rolling out on 30 September 2026.
Image generation and editing, advanced autofill and site analytics use Copilot Credits, Microsoft's usage-based billing, which is rolling out at the same time. ChangePilot notes that these paid options are visible to users by default but use nothing until an admin creates a spending policy.
Should your business use it?
Businesses already paying for Microsoft 365 Copilot should try Copilot in SharePoint on one busy document library before rolling it out more widely.
My take: the version history feature is the one I'd try first. Every business has had a document overwritten by someone who swears they never opened it. Before anyone goes near the paid extras, decide in the admin centre who can spend Copilot Credits. Otherwise the most surprising document in SharePoint might be your next invoice.
