ChatGPT's dots can now be set up from your phone and hand work to Codex, which is more delegating than some managers manage

By , Founder of Adaptd ·

On 9 October OpenAI let people create their dot in the ChatGPT mobile app. Dots can now also start work in Codex and edit Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work.

The short version

  • You can now create a ChatGPT dot, OpenAI's always-on AI agent, straight from the ChatGPT app on iOS and Android.
  • OpenAI announced the update on 9 October 2026, along with Codex handoff, Scheduled Tasks editing and easier Outlook setup.
  • If you use a dot, review what it can reach in Codex and your scheduled tasks before you hand it more work.

When OpenAI launched dots at the end of September, setting one up meant sitting at a computer. You can now do it from the couch, which may or may not be progress.

What changed in ChatGPT dots?

ChatGPT dots, OpenAI's always-on AI agents, can now be created in the ChatGPT mobile app on iOS and Android. OpenAI announced the update on 9 October 2026.

A dot can now also start work in Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, and follow up on existing Codex threads. It draws on your ChatGPT conversations, Codex threads and automations, and OpenAI says it's better at deciding when to continue a thread or start a fresh one.

What else is in the update?

Dots can now review and edit Scheduled Tasks in ChatGPT Work, so you can ask what's scheduled or change a recurring task when plans shift.

OpenAI also listed smaller fixes: faster browsing, fewer unnecessary notifications, cleaner code blocks and attachments, easier Outlook setup, and more reliable Enterprise access on web and voice. The first dot comes with the Pro and Business Premium plans.

Should your business use a dot?

Businesses already trialling a dot should check what it can now reach before giving it more to do.

My take: phone setup is handy, but the Codex and Scheduled Tasks changes matter more, because they let a dot start and change work, not just suggest it. My advice: keep your dot's rules tight, require approval for anything it sends or changes, and look over its scheduled tasks every week or so. An assistant that can rearrange your recurring jobs is great, right up until the Friday invoice run quietly moves to Sunday.
