ChatGPT can now turn an audio file into notes, so the voice memo you recorded in the car finally gets read

OpenAI added audio uploads to ChatGPT on 6 October. Paid users can upload a recording and get a transcript, a summary, structured notes or a follow-up email draft.
The short version
- ChatGPT can now take an uploaded audio file and turn it into a transcript, summary, structured notes or a draft follow-up email.
- It is rolling out on web and mobile to paid ChatGPT plans and workspaces from 6 October 2026.
- Get consent before you record anyone, and check names and numbers in the transcript before you send anything.
Most businesses have a folder of recordings nobody will ever listen to again: client calls, site walk-throughs, the idea you had on the freeway. ChatGPT can now do the listening for you.
What changed in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT now accepts uploaded audio files and can turn them into a transcript, a summary or structured notes. You can also ask it to draft a follow-up email from the recording, or ask questions about what was said.
Until now you had to transcribe a recording somewhere else first, or talk to ChatGPT live. Now the file goes straight into the chat, the same way you'd attach a PDF.
Who can use it, and when?
Audio uploads are rolling out to paid ChatGPT subscriptions and workspaces on web and mobile, announced on 6 October 2026. OpenAI says availability may vary by workspace settings, region, app version and model, so it may not appear for everyone straight away.
OpenAI hasn't published which audio formats are supported or how long a file can be. It also warns that transcripts may contain errors and that accuracy varies across languages.
Should your business use it?
Businesses that record client calls or site visits should try it, because turning a recording into notes and a follow-up email is a real time saver. A meeting nobody wrote up is a meeting that only half happened.
My advice: two rules before you start. First, tell people you're recording and get their OK, because a recording of a client is personal information. Second, read the transcript before you act on it, especially names, prices and dates. AI transcription is good, but it can still turn 'fifteen' into 'fifty', and only one of those fits the quote you sent.

That's exactly what the discovery call is for.
