Atlassian starts billing for extra Rovo AI use on 3 December, and it's switched on by default, like a bar tab nobody remembers opening

From 3 December 2026, Atlassian charges for Rovo AI use beyond the credits included in its paid plans. Extra usage is on unless an admin sets a limit.
The short version
- Rovo credits are the units Atlassian uses to measure AI use in its paid cloud products, including Jira and Confluence.
- From 3 December 2026, use beyond each plan's included credits is billed at US$0.01 per credit, and extra usage is on by default.
- Check your Rovo usage in Atlassian Administration and set a spending cap before December.
Atlassian's AI has been running on a free tab for a while. From 3 December, the tab gets settled.
What changes with Rovo credits on 3 December?
From 3 December 2026, Atlassian bills for Rovo AI use beyond the credits included in a paid plan, at US$0.01 per credit, or US$10 per 1,000. Rovo credits measure AI use in paid Jira, Confluence and Collection subscriptions.
Extra usage is enabled by default. If nobody touches the settings, Rovo keeps working past the allowance and the extra lands on the next bill.
How many credits does each plan include?
Jira and Confluence include 25 Rovo credits per user per month on Standard, 70 on Premium and 150 on Enterprise. The Service and Teamwork Collections include ten times as many on each plan.
Rovo Search and summaries are free. Basic features cost 10 credits per billable event, and in chat every message counts as one. So on Jira Standard, the included allowance works out to about two and a half chat messages per user per month. Premium features cost a variable amount.
What should your business do about it?
Businesses on paid Atlassian plans should check their Rovo usage in Atlassian Administration now and set a spending cap on extra usage before 3 December. Admins can also switch extra usage off, which pauses the paid features until the allowance resets.
My take: US$10 per 1,000 credits isn't scary on its own. The trouble is a default nobody chose, on a tool your team uses without thinking about cost. That's how a quiet line item becomes a loud conversation with the accounts team.
Set a cap you'd be comfortable explaining, check it after the first month, and adjust. It takes ten minutes, which is less time than the meeting about the bill would take.
